Formed in the early 1990s by vibraphonist Dave Samuels, the Caribbean Jazz Project began as a trio featuring percussionist Andy Narell and saxophonist Paquito d'Rivera. In the years since its inception, however, the Project has grown into a big band of nearly 20. The force of the large ensemble, particularly the horns, can be heard on AFRO BOP ALLIANCE. As the title suggests, the music focuses on Afro-Cuban jazz, but there's plenty of mainland Latin influence and North American traditional jazz in the mix (as evidenced by the covers of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane). Hard-grooving arrangements and stellar playing make AFRO BOP ALLIANCE an exhilarating ride.

The U.K.'s BGO Records reissues three Al di Meola mid-'80s albums on a pair of CDs. First is the nearly smooth jazz Soaring Through a Dream released originally on EMI's Manhattan imprint in 1985 -- this album was an attempt by the great guitarist to score a hit single or two on the then-newly formed smooth jazz radio format.
Next is the lightweight acoustic set Cielo e Terra, released during the same year, that is easily the best in this bunch, as it .contains a couple of fine tines such as the title track and "Atavism of Twilight." Finally, the 1987 offering, Tirami Su, was a half-hearted attempt by the guitarist to return to fusion -- the very thing that had established his reputation in the first place. A motley collection to be sure.

Review
On his fourth recording--his first for Blue Note Records-- guitarist Ronny Jordan moves in a more mainstream direction. He minimizes the hip-hop and rap elements in his mix to favor a more subdued, straightforward jazz approach that brings to mind one of Jordan's role models, Wes Montgomery. While this may furrow the brows of some acid-jazz fans, the results heard on this 73-minute excursion are largely positive and quietly appealing. The London-born Jordan reveals himself as thoughtful and expressive player, notably on self-composed, Pat Metheny-like, pop-jazz cruisers ("Two Worlds," "Rio," "Seeing Is Believing") and in a more mainstream vein, "5/8 in Flow." For some listeners, A Brighter Day may at times stray uncomfortably close to smooth-jazz innocuousness, but Jordan's prevailing inventiveness makes the overall package a pleasant one. Highlights are the soft-but-sweet grooves found on "Aftermath" and "Mackin'," the animated playing from vibraphonist Roy Ayers on "Mystic Voyage," and the nimble finger work heard on "New Delhi." --Terry Wood ~ Amazon.com

David (Dave) Warren Brubeck (December 6, 1920, Concord, CA, USA) - American jazz composer, arranger, pianist and quartet leader ?The Dave Brubeck Quartet?. One of the prominent representatives of cool-jazz ("cool jazz" or jazz California 1950-1960s).
In an interview with Vladimir Posner to write the program ?Brubeck returns to Moscow? Brubeck says that he has Jewish roots, and one of his grandmothers was from Belarus. He also said that his family was Presbyterian, but he himself did not baptize, and he later converted to Catholicism after composing the Mass ?To Hope?.

In fact, the work of the quartet is a collective work, where the contribution of Brubeck's difficult to separate from the contributions of other participants. One participant Quartet - saxophonist Paul Desmond, known for his experiments with the size of (name of the works speak for themselves: "Five quarters", "eleven quarters," etc.)
One of the most famous works of Dave Brubeck Quartet is a classic jazz composition ?Take Five? (composer Paul Desmond), written in 1959 and included in the album ?Time Out?.
It was the first jazz composition, which reached one million sales. In 1961, she entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
